Geoffrey Mukasa
1954 - 2009

Kampala - UGANDA

Geoffrey Mukasa was born in 1954 in Kampala, Uganda. He was a descendent from one of Uganda’s most prominent and historic political figure, Sir Apollo Kaggwa (1864-1927), the Buganda Prime Minister from 1890 to 1926. Geoffrey spent part of his childhood in the privileged environment of the palace of the Buganda Kingdom.

From 1978 to 1980 he studied Fine Art at the University of Lucknow, India, and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art. His artistic foundation was laid by his mentor, the eccentric and renowned Indian master painter M.F. Husain. In addition his work was influenced by European modernists in particular the cubists George Braque and Pablo Picasso.

In 1981 Mukasa returned to Uganda, and worked for a short period as a graphic designer with the Ministry of Information and Uganda Television. He worked together with now renowned artist friends, like the late Romano Lutwama, Fabian Mpagi and Eli Kyeyune, who were some of Uganda’s master painters in the 1980s and 90s.

For over 20 years Mukasa was a full time artist, well known in Uganda and abroad as he exhibited throughout the world. Geoffrey Mukasa passed on in 2009 at the age of 55.
