Peterson Kamwathi

Kenya

Born in 1980 in Nairobi, Peterson Kamwathi is part of a new generation of East African artists, creating innovative, conceptual art, critical towards local and global political, social, economic and environmental issues, however, not concealing their African roots.

The artist uses thick layers of charcoal, pastel, watercolor, stencils and/or cut-outs to characterize his work. The figures are anonymous, static and almost abstract.
His 2007 exhibition ‘Sitting Allowance’ in Nairobi, reflecting the post-election violence of 2007/8 propelled him to national and international level.
Since then Kamwathi’s work has been exhibited in numerous venues around the world amongst others United Kingdom, USA, The Netherlands, Austria and Finland. He was represented in the ‘1:54 Art Fair of Contemporary African Art’ in London and New York and participated in 2017 with other Kenyan artists in the ‘Venice Biennale’. One artwork in this collection (KAM 1) is part of his exhibition ‘Protest Series’, shown in the Frost Museum in Miami/USA in 2013. The other two paintings (KAM 2 & 3) are from two of his successful exhibitions in Nairobi: ‘Constellation & Sediments I’ and ‘Constellation & Sediments II’ from 2016 and 2018.
