Pilkington Ssengendo was born in 1942 in Kampala,Uganda.

He holds an academic degree in education from the Makarere University in Kampala.
He was Dean of the Faculty of Fine Art at the Makarere University from 1992 to 2003.

His earlier artworks, nationally and internationally appreciated, show mainly impressionistic landscapes around Kampala in a fine technique. ‘Delicate short brush strokes of the scenery and a sky full of lightness and grace’. In his later artworks Ssengendo integrated African material - in particular bark cloth and jute fabric – and developed a more semi-figurative and semi-abstract approach, as shown in the painting of the Gallery’s collection ‘Young Woman in Grey’. Pilkington Ssengendo lives and works as a freelance, retired artist in Kampala.
